The bill-splitting math nobody agrees on: tax, tip, shared plates, and the leftover cent

There is no single correct way to split a restaurant bill. There are about six defensible ways, they produce answers that differ by twenty dollars a head, and your table has never agreed on which one it uses. Here is every rule with the arithmetic worked all the way out — tax, tip, the shared bottle, and the cent that will not divide.

Nobody at the table is confused about arithmetic. Four adults can divide $154.65 by four in their heads, near enough.

The argument that follows is about something else. There are roughly six defensible rules for splitting a restaurant bill, they disagree with each other by twenty dollars a head, and no group has ever sat down and picked one in advance. So the rule gets chosen at the moment of maximum social pressure, by whoever speaks first, and the person it disadvantages says nothing.

Here is every rule with the arithmetic worked all the way out. The part about why the fair rule is hard to propose comes after the numbers, because the numbers are the easy half.

What are you actually splitting?

A restaurant bill is four or five separate things stacked on top of each other. Each layer has its own defensible rule, and most bill arguments come from applying one layer’s rule to a different layer.

Two notes on that table.

US sales tax is added on top, and the rate is local. New York City’s combined state and local rate is 8.875% — 4% state, 4.5% city, and a 0.375% Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District surcharge — which you can check in the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance’s Publication 718 rate tables. In the EU and UK, VAT is already baked into every printed price, so there is no tax layer to distribute at all. That single structural difference is why American and European bill-splitting arguments sound nothing alike: in Europe the line item is the whole truth, and in the US it is roughly three-quarters of what you will actually pay once tax and tip land on top.

Whether the tip goes on the pre-tax subtotal or the post-tax total is convention rather than rule. The traditional answer is pre-tax, because the tax is not the restaurant’s money. The suggested-tip lines printed at the bottom of many US checks are computed on the post-tax total. On the bill below, that is the difference between $24.00 and $26.13. Neither is wrong. Announcing which one you used is what matters.

The UK has a related wrinkle worth knowing: since the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023 came into force in October 2024, employers must pass on 100% of qualifying tips and service charges to staff. It does not change your arithmetic. It does mean the discretionary service line is now more likely to reach the people who served you than it once was.

Example 1: what proportional tax and tip actually costs the steak

Four people. One ribeye at $58, one salad at $14, and two orders in between. Subtotal $120.00. Tax at 8.875% is $10.65. Tip at 20% of the pre-tax subtotal is $24.00. The bill is $154.65.

Each person’s tax share is (their items divided by $120) times $10.65. Their tip share is the same fraction of $24.00. So Alex’s order, which is 11.67% of the food, carries 11.67% of the tax and 11.67% of the tip.

The headline is the last column. An even split charges Alex $20.62 more than the salad actually cost — on one dinner, at a table of only four. Twenty-six dinners a year with the same group and the same ordering habits and that is $536 moving from the salad to the ribeye — not as a grievance, just as arithmetic.

Notice what the tip column does. Under an even split, Alex pays $6.00 of the tip on $14 of food. Under proportional distribution, Alex pays $2.80. The tip is where even-splitting does its quietest damage, because it is the layer people are least likely to check.

Now look at the two totals. The by-item column sums to $154.66. The even column sums to $154.64. The receipt says $154.65. Neither is a mistake and neither can be fixed by being more careful, which is Example 3.

Who pays for the shared appetiser, and who pays for the bottle?

Same table, different night. Four mains, one charcuterie board at $24 in the middle of the table, one bottle of wine at $48. Sam is driving and drank water.

Both columns collect exactly $172. The difference is entirely in where the $48 bottle lands: by headcount Sam pays $12 for wine he did not drink, and by consumption the three drinkers pay $16 each instead.

Add a 20% tip and the gap widens, because tip rides on the subtotal. Sam’s total goes from $45.60 by headcount to $31.20 by consumption — a $14.40 swing on one bottle he never touched. The drinkers each move $4.80 the other way.

The harder case is the one people actually argue about: Sam had one glass out of six. Splitting a bottle by pours is arithmetically trivial and socially unworkable, because somebody would have had to count. The rule that survives contact with a real table is binary — you were in on the bottle or you weren’t. If Sam took a glass, he is in for a full share. That imprecision is the price of not conducting an audit over a wine bottle, and it is a price worth paying.

So the two rules are not the same rule, and conflating them is where tables go wrong. The test is visibility: did anyone watch you opt out? Sam refusing wine happened in front of everyone, so the bottle is not his. Nobody could have seen who took two olives and who took five, so the board goes across the head count.

What do you do with the leftover cent?

A bar tab. Six people, everything genuinely shared, $101.00. Divided six ways that is $16.8333…, and there is no way to pay a third of a cent. Maya put down her card.

A — the payer takes the remainder. Six times $16.83 is $100.98, so two cents are orphaned. Put them on the card-holder’s own line: five people send $16.83, Maya’s share becomes $16.85. It costs the payer two cents, it is completely transparent, and it is over in one step. This is the right default for a bill you will never think about again.

B — rotate it. Identical arithmetic with a different name on the odd line. Tonight Ivan takes the two cents, next time someone else does. This only means anything in a group that eats together often enough for “next time” to be real. Otherwise it is ceremony, and it costs a conversation to administer.

C — everyone rounds up and the payer keeps the surplus. The five others send $16.84 each, Maya collects $84.20, and her own cost lands at $16.80 — three cents under her exact share. At the cent level that is invisible. At the dollar level it is not: if everyone sends a flat $17.00, Maya collects $85.00 and pays $16.00, an 83-cent discount for holding the card and then chasing five transfers.

The one rule to avoid is rounding everyone down, because the payer absorbs the gap without anybody deciding that they should. Two cents does not matter; the habit does, because it scales with the unit. A $487.35 bill split eleven ways is $44.30 a head, and a table that rounds down to a flat $44 collects $484 and leaves the payer $3.35 short — every time, invisibly.

Which splitting rule fits which table?

The right rule is a function of the social situation, not the arithmetic. Here is how I would map them, with the way each one fails:

How do you split a bill in a foreign currency?

Use the rate your card actually charged. The problem is that you cannot know that number at the table, and possibly not for two days. Card networks convert at their own daily rate — Visa publishes an exchange rate calculator and Mastercard a currency converter — applied on the settlement date rather than the day you ate, and your issuer may add a foreign-transaction fee on top, commonly in the 0-3% range depending on the card. So the rate printed nowhere on the receipt, the rate in your phone’s currency app, and the rate that eventually lands on your statement are three different numbers.

So fix one rate for the whole trip, in advance, and tell everyone which one. “We’re using 1.08 for the week” is checkable and applies to everyone equally. A rate that changes per meal is not more accurate, only harder to audit, and it invites the suspicion that whoever picked it picked favourably. Whoever fronted the card can reconcile against their statement afterwards if the drift turns out to be material, which for a week of dinners it almost never is.

Why the arithmetic was never the hard part

Everything above is a solved problem. A calculator does it. A spreadsheet does it better.

Bills still get split badly because proposing the fair rule costs something. Saying “let’s split by item” at a table of six means saying out loud that you noticed what other people ordered and priced it. It is arithmetically neutral and socially loaded, and most people will hand over $20 they do not owe rather than be the one who brought a calculator to dinner. The design answer is not better math. It is to move the itemising off the table: do it privately, on one phone, in under a minute, and present a finished number to each person rather than a process. People do not object to receiving a total. They object to watching one get constructed about them.

That is the whole shape of RightSplit. Where it stops is at one table on one night. It has no ledger. If what you have is four flatmates, a shared electricity bill, and eight months of accumulated who-owes-whom, RightSplit is the wrong tool and Splitwise is the right one — running balances across months, with debt simplification, is its whole reason for existing and RightSplit does not attempt any of it. And if you want the split and the payment in one place, Venmo’s split feature does that; RightSplit deliberately does not, because producing a number and letting everyone pay however they already pay is a smaller promise that survives people switching payment apps.

RightSplit also does not convert currencies. It reads the numbers as printed and splits in the receipt’s currency, so on a trip you are doing the conversion yourself, once, on the totals — which is what the fixed-rate advice above amounts to anyway, but it is a real limitation and better to know before Lisbon than during it.   • Assign items first, then hand out tax and tip in proportion to each person’s subtotal. On a $120 subtotal, the $58 ribeye carries $11.60 of a 20% tip and the $14 salad carries $2.80 — not $6.00 each.
  • An even split is not neutral. At a table of four with a $58 order and a $14 order, it moves $20.62 from the light eater to the heavy one in a single dinner.
  • Shared plates go to the people who shared them, not to the head count. One person abstaining from a $48 bottle is a $14.40 swing once tip is included, and the workable test is whether the table saw them opt out.
  • The leftover cents need a rule, and three are defensible. The payer takes the remainder, rotate it, or everyone rounds up and the payer keeps the surplus. Rounding everyone down is the only version that under-collects silently.
  • In a foreign currency, fix one rate for the whole trip and say which one. The real rate is set at settlement, plus roughly 0-3% in issuer fees, and you cannot know it at the table.
  • The math was never the bottleneck. Itemising in front of people reads as an audit; do it privately and present a result.

The rules are all fine. Picking one before the bill arrives, instead of after, is the entire trick.

Rounding everyone down is the one option to avoid, because it silently under-collects and the payer eats the gap without deciding to.
