The best 2048 apps for iPhone
for people who are tired of the ads.

Search "2048" on the App Store and you'll get a wall of near-identical clones, most of them stuffed with banners, pre-roll video, and "watch an ad to continue." This is the honest, current shortlist: which one is genuinely best for each kind of player, what's actually free, and which ones respect your attention. One disclosure up front: Zen 2048 is our app — we'll say so every time it appears, and we'll tell you when something else is the better pick.

The short version

🏆 Best ad-free & best 3D — Zen 2048 (ours)
The classic 2048 rebuilt as a real 3D board you can tilt and spin, with 17 designer material themes, tactile haptics, a daily challenge, and zero ads or tracking. Free; optional themes from $1.99 and undo tokens from $0.99. Full details →
🎮 Most familiar free version — 2048 (Ketchapp)
The version most people have actually played. Same classic rules, free to download — but ad-supported, with banners and interstitials, and a flat 2D board. Fine if you don't mind the ads. Zen 2048 vs Ketchapp's 2048 →
🌱 The purist original — 2048 by Gabriele Cirulli
The free, open-source original from 2014, still playable in a browser at play2048.co. Canonical and minimal, but a web page: flat, no real offline mode, no themes. play2048.co → · vs Zen 2048 →
💎 A deeper, different puzzle — Threes
Not a 2048 clone — the paid design landmark that inspired 2048, with a slower, deeper 1-2-then-threes mechanic. If you want a puzzle to really study, buy it on its own terms. Threes vs Zen 2048 →

All five, honestly compared

Summarised from each app's public listing and reputation, plus our own testing on iPhone, June 2026. The "2048" App Store category is full of near-identical clones — these are the ones genuinely worth knowing about.

Deeper one-on-one comparisons: Zen 2048 vs 2048 (Ketchapp) · vs Threes · vs the original · vs 2048 Cube Winner · vs Suika Game

One to be aware of: 2048 Cube Winner markets a "3D" look and prize rewards, but it's a fixed presentation wrapped in heavy rewarded-video ads and spin-to-win loops — a different experience from a calm, ad-free puzzle. If the 3D look is what pulled you in, Zen 2048 is the honest version of that idea.

The ads problem, answered honestly

If you've tried to find a clean 2048 on the App Store and given up, it wasn't you. 2048's rules were open-sourced in 2014, so the store filled with clones — and because the puzzle is simple and free to copy, almost all of them monetise the only way a copied game can: ads. Pre-roll video before a game, interstitials every few moves, lives you refill by watching, and reward loops bolted onto a number puzzle. The Ketchapp version is the cleanest of the mass-market free ones and still shows banners and interstitials; 2048 Cube Winner goes much further. Zen 2048 (ours) takes the opposite route: it's free with no ads at all and no tracking — funded only by optional designer themes and undo tokens you never need — and it adds the things ads crowd out, a real 3D board and 17 material themes. The design and engineering story is in our journal post on rebuilding 2048 in 3D. Whichever you pick: a number puzzle this small should never cost you a video ad per game.

How to pick, by what you actually want

You want classic 2048, just without the ads
Get Zen 2048 (ours). Same rules you know, zero ads, a real 3D board you can tilt, 17 themes, fully offline. Free, and you never need to buy anything.
You just want the exact app you remember
That's usually the Ketchapp version — free, familiar, and fine if the ads don't bother you. It's the default most people already have.
You want the purist, original game
Play the original by Gabriele Cirulli in your browser — free and open-source. For a native, offline, prettier version of those exact rules, Zen 2048.
You want a deeper puzzle to study
Buy Threes — a different, slower, hand-crafted game and a genuine design landmark. It's not 2048, and that's the point. For fruit-physics merging instead, Suika Game.

Questions

FAQ

What is the best 2048 app for iPhone?
It depends on the job. Zen 2048 (ours) is the best ad-free version — classic 2048 rebuilt as a real 3D board with 17 themes, no ads, no tracking. The Ketchapp version is the most familiar free one but is ad-supported. The original by Gabriele Cirulli is the free open-source web game. Threes is a different, paid, excellent puzzle.
What is the best 2048 game without ads?
Zen 2048 — no banners, no interstitials, no rewarded video, no "watch to continue." It's free with no ad-supported tier, funded only by optional themes and undo tokens, and runs fully offline with no tracking SDKs.
Is 2048 the same as Threes?
No — different games, and Threes came first. Threes merges 1+2 into 3, then equal multiples of three; it's a slower, deeper, paid puzzle. 2048 merges two equal tiles into their double toward 2048. Want the Threes mechanic? Buy Threes. Want clean ad-free 2048? Zen 2048.
What is the original 2048, and can I still play it?
The original by Gabriele Cirulli (2014, MIT-licensed) is still free in a browser at play2048.co — canonical but a flat web page with no real offline mode. Zen 2048 keeps its exact rules in a native iPhone app with a 3D board, themes, and offline play.
Is there a 3D 2048 game?
Yes — Zen 2048 renders the board in real 3D you can tilt and spin to any angle, then it snaps back to a clean view to play. (2048 Cube Winner markets a 3D look too, but it's fixed and wrapped in heavy ads and reward loops.)
What is the best free 2048 game for iPhone?
Zen 2048 is the most polished free option and the only one that's free and ad-free. The Ketchapp version and the original are also free — the Ketchapp one is ad-supported, the original is the open-source web game.
